ECT is provided on either an outpatient or inpatient basis, and is a treatment option for individuals with treatment-resistant depression, mania, medication intolerance or psychotic depression. Certified and trained physicians and nurses provide consultation, evaluation, education, and treatment for individuals experiencing depression as well as other psychiatric conditions who might benefit from ECT. Prior to receiving ECT as an outpatient, patients are admitted to the inpatient unit to have the necessary medical assessment and begin the course of ECT. Once it is deemed appropriate to continue on an outpatient basis, patients are discharged and return to the hospital for continued treatments, which typically occur one to two times per month or more frequently when indicated.
